The History of the Bikini

July 1946. A date to be remembered in the fashion world. Seventy-two-years ago history was made.

Yes, believe it or not, that is exactly how long it has been since the invention of the bikini. And it hasn’t gone out of style since! At the time of its creation, it was a radically new fashion statement, a piece that defied the more restrictive fashions of the time and created a storm as it did so.

Debuting at a fashion show in Paris, the bikini was the brainchild of Louis Réard. The idea came as a result of the fabric rationing that the US government had implemented at the time. All over France, fashion houses had already been using the rationing to create more revealing swimsuits and redesign it for a less liberal time. But, it was Réard who decided to take it a step further and shocked the world of fashion as he did so.

Some people were so shocked, in fact, that the bikini was even banned for a period in 1951. Countries that banned the look included Belgium, Italy, Spain and Austria. The Vatican went so far as to dub bikinis as sinful! Obviously, this ban didn’t last forever.

But, in the end, it is a fact that the world of swimwear was transformed forevermore. A transformation which paved the way for some of the amazing pieces below:
